When I first started working in my current job, people assumed I keep religious holidays and eat kosher food and were very disappointed when I told them that I don't. So I told them, when God fixes everything else that is wrong with our world and the only problem left will be me not following his rules, I will think about following them.

I really don't think God cares about what we eat or if we go to church or synagogue, you have a good heart, you're a nice, sweet person, that's what matters.

And I don't think I'd call your roommate a "friend", he seems anything but, to be honest.
